Our Philosophy

We understand that dogs are many things to many people: companions, best friends, healers, team mates and yes, doggie soul mates. They bring opportunities of love, laughter, loyalty... what a gift they are to us. We should be the same great gift to them by becoming the great leaders they need in their lives.

Did you know that in the United States 8 out of 10 dogs are being re-homed or euthanized despite the increases in dog training participation, & sales of training devices such as: shock collars, clickers, halter collars, choke chains and treats?   Obviously these efforts aren’t transforming this unacceptable statistic.

Many of today’s popular training methods do not endure, because they rely on bribery or force, while Tenderfoot’s methods last a lifetime because it’s about relationship.

Our goal is to improve your relationship with your dog so that he listens to you and works with you as a team – out of mutual love, trust and respect. We would like you to live in harmony with your dog – not frustration. It is our hope that through this greater knowledge and understanding of relationship your life will be enhanced, and you will become a better parent, teacher, partner, leader, friend and caretaker to all the beings that you encounter in this life.

We do not use ‘devices’ in our training – NO chokes chains, halter collars, pinch collars, shock collars or clickers. If you rely on a force, treat or device your dog will too, and it can be difficult to be successful off leash, at long distances, or with distractions.   A relationship should not be based on force or bribery. The only tools we use are a wide, flat collar and a comfortable leash – from there we teach you how to use your voice and body language to get the results you want and you can be off leash very quickly.

Tenderfoot’s methods will teach you how to communicate with your dog in a manner he already understands. With our relationship drills, your dog will learn to look to you for advice whenever he has a decision to make – this will solve most of your problems and help to prevent any new ones. You will learn how to do just enough to get the job done.

Too many times, people inadvertently teach their dogs bad habits and don’t understand how it happened. We are here to help and our advice is very common sense so it is easy to apply. Together we can break those bad habits and replace them with good ones. We just need a little bit of your time and you can make a fresh start with your best buddy today!

“I have personally experienced the training methods that Doug & Elizabeth are using and I find them to be far superior to any of the current methods I have seen in my 33 years of practice.”  ~ D. Courtley, D.V.M.,
